The period from the start of World War I to the late s featured sharply polarized politics, Adolphe Thiers called republicanism in the s the form of government that divides France least, however, politics under the Third Republic were sharply polarized.
On the left stood Reformist France, heir to the French Revolution, on the right stood conservative France, rooted in the peasantry, the Roman Catholic Church and the army.
The deputies then selected General Louis-Jules Trochu to serve as its president and this first government of the Third Republic ruled during the Siege of Paris.
After the French surrender in January , the provisional Government of National Defence disbanded, French territories occupied by Prussia at this time did not participate.
The resulting conservative National Assembly elected Adolphe Thiers as head of a provisional government, due to the revolutionary and left-wing political climate that prevailed in the Parisian population, the right-wing government chose the royal palace of Versailles as its headquarters.
The new government negotiated a settlement with the newly proclaimed German Empire. To prompt the Prussians to leave France, the government passed a variety of laws, such as the controversial Law of Maturities.
The following repression of the communards would have consequences for the labor movement. Chambord believed the monarchy had to eliminate all traces of the Revolution in order to restore the unity between the monarchy and the nation, which the revolution had sundered apart.
Compromise on this was if the nation were to be made whole again. Lisieux — Lisieux is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northwestern France.
It is the capital of the Pays dAuge area, which is characterised by valleys, the name of the town derives from the Latin Noviomagus Lexoviorum.
Owing to the number of similarly-named cities, however, it was necessary to specify where this one was located. The local French demonym Lexoviens derives from the Latin as well, Lisieux was the capital of the Lexovii.
In his work, Commentaries on the Gallic War, Caesar mentions a Gallic oppidum, the oppidum has been pinpointed to a place referred to as le Castellier, located 3 kilometers to the southwest of the town.
However the Gallo-Roman city was in fact located where Lisieux is to be found today, Lisieux was an important center of power in medieval times.
The bishopric of Lisieux controlled most of the Pays dAuge by the 12th century, the main judge of Joan of Arc, Pierre Cauchon, became a bishop of Lisieux after her death and is buried in the Lady Chapel of the cathedral.
He commissioned the building of the chapel of the cathedral. Lisieux is situated on the confluence of the river Touques and many of its tributaries, the town is in the heart of the Pays dAuge, of which it is the capital.
Lisieux is therefore surrounded by Normandys typical hedged farmland, where there is a mix of livestock farming, Lisieux has a temperate oceanic humid climate.
Calvados department — Calvados is a department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. It takes its name from a cluster of rocks off the English Channel coast, Calvados is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March It was created from a part of the province of Normandy.
It is more likely, however, that the name Calvados was derived from calva dorsa, meaning bare backs, after the allied victory at Waterloo the department was occupied by Prussian troops between June and November On 6 June , the Allied forces landed on the beaches of the Bay of the Seine in what known as the Battle of Normandy.
Calvados belongs to the region of Normandy and is surrounded by the departments of Seine-Maritime, Eure, Orne, to the north is the Baie de la Seine, part of the English Channel.
The most notable places in Calvados include Deauville and the formerly elegant 19th-century casino resorts of the coast, agriculture dominates the economy of Calvados.
One of the advantage of Calvados is to be fairly near large urban centers, Calvados is therefore often preferred for holidays and for weekends and sometimes considered as the countryside of Paris.
Calvados, via the port of Ouistreham, is an entrance to the continent from Britain, there are two airports, Caen-Carpiquet and Deauville-Saint Gatien.
He was the first sovereign of Vatican City from its creation as an independent state on 11 February and he took as his papal motto, Pax Christi in Regno Christi, translated The Peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ.
During his pontificate, the hostility with the Italian government over the status of the papacy. Pius XI created the feast of Christ the King in response to anti-clericalism and he took a strong interest in fostering the participation of lay people throughout the Catholic Church, especially in the Catholic Action movement.
The end of his pontificate was dominated by speaking out against Hitler and Mussolini and defending the Catholic Church from intrusions into Catholic life and he died on 10 February in the Apostolic Palace and is buried in the Papal Grotto of Saint Peters Basilica.
In the course of excavating space for his tomb, two levels of burial grounds were uncovered which revealed bones now venerated as the bones of St.
Achille Ratti was born in Desio, in the province of Milan, in and he was ordained a priest in and embarked on an academic career within the Church.
He obtained three doctorates at the Gregorian University in Rome, and then from to was a professor at the seminary in Padua and his scholarly specialty was as an expert paleographer, a student of ancient and medieval Church manuscripts.
Eventually, he left teaching to work full-time at the Ambrosian Library in Milan. During this time, he edited and published an edition of the Ambrosian Missal and he became chief of the Library in and undertook a thorough programme of restoration and re-classification of the Ambrosians collection.
He was also a mountaineer in his spare time, reaching the summits of Monte Rosa. The combination of a pope would not be seen again until the pontificate of John Paul II.
In , at Pope Pius Xs invitation, he moved to the Vatican to become Vice-Prefect of the Vatican Library, in October , Benedict was the first head of state to congratulate the Polish people on the occasion of the restoration of their independence.
In March , he nominated ten new bishops and, soon after, Ratti was consecrated as a titular archbishop in October Benedict XV and Nuncio Ratti repeatedly cautioned Polish authorities against persecuting the Lithuanian and Ruthenian clergy, Ratti intended to work for Poland by building bridges to men of goodwill in the Soviet Union, even to shedding his blood for Russia.
Benedict, however, needed Ratti as a diplomat, not as a martyr, the nuncios continued contacts with Russians did not generate much sympathy for him within Poland at the time.
After Pope Benedict sent Ratti to Silesia to forestall potential political agitation within the Polish Catholic clergy, on 20 November, when German Cardinal Adolf Bertram announced a papal ban on all political activities of clergymen, calls for Rattis expulsion climaxed.
Shrine — A shrine is a holy or sacred place, which is dedicated to a specific deity, ancestor, hero, martyr, saint, daemon, or similar figure of awe and respect, at which they are venerated or worshipped.
Shrines often contain idols, relics, or other objects associated with the figure being venerated. A shrine at which offerings are made is called an altar.
Shrines can be found in various settings, such as churches, temples, cemeteries, or in the home, a shrine may become a focus of a cult image.
Many shrines are located buildings and in the temples designed specifically for worship, such as a church in Christianity. A shrine here is usually the centre of attention in the building, in such cases, adherents of the faith assemble within the building in order to venerate the deity at the shrine.
In classical temple architecture, the shrine may be synonymous with the cella, historically, in Hinduism, Buddhism and Roman Catholicism, and also in modern faiths, such as Neopaganism, a shrine can commonly be found within the home or shop.
This shrine is usually a structure or a setup of pictures and figurines dedicated to a deity that is part of the official religion. Small household shrines are common among the Chinese and people from South and Southeast Asia, whether Hindu.
Usually a small lamp and small offerings are kept daily by the shrine, Buddhist household shrines must be on a shelf above the head, Chinese shrines must stand directly on the floor.
Small outdoor yard shrines are found at the bottom of many gardens, following various religions, including historically. Shrines are found in most, though not all, religions, Shrines therefore attract the practice of pilgrimage.
Shrines are found in many, though not all, forms of Christianity, Roman Catholicism, the largest denomination of Christianity, has many shrines, as do Orthodox Christianity and Anglicanism.
For a shrine to be described as national, the approval of the Episcopal Conference is necessary, for it to be described as international, the approval of the Holy See is required.
Another use of the shrine in colloquial Catholic terminology is a niche or alcove in most — especially larger — churches used by parishioners when praying privately in the church.
They were also called Devotional Altars, since they could look like small Side Altars or bye-altars, Shrines were always centered on some image of Christ or a saint — for instance, a statue, painting, mural or mosaic, and may have had a reredos behind them.
However, Mass would not be celebrated at them, they were used to aid or give a visual focus for prayers. Side altars, where Mass could actually be celebrated, were used in a way to shrines by parishioners.
Saint symbolism — Christianity has used symbolism from its very beginnings. Each saint has a story and a reason why he or she led an exemplary life, symbols have been used to tell these stories throughout the history of the Church.
A number of Christian saints are traditionally represented by a symbol or iconic motif associated with their life, termed an attribute or emblem, the study of these forms part of iconography in art history.
They were particularly used so that the illiterate could recognize a scene and they are often carried in the hand by the Saint. Attributes often vary with time or geography, especially between Eastern Christianity and the West.
Orthodox images more often contained inscriptions with the names of saints, many of the most prominent saints, like Saint Peter and Saint John the Evangelist can also be recognised by a distinctive facial type — as can Christ.
Some attributes are general, such as the palm frond carried by martyrs, the use of a symbol in a work of art depicting a Saint reminds people who is being shown and of their story.
The older branch of the order, Carmelites of the Ancient Observance, has the initials O. Carm, the secular branch of the order, has the initials O.
The Discalced Carmelites are men and women, in religious consecration and lay people, the Carmelite nuns live in cloistered monasteries and follow a completely contemplative life.
The Carmelite friars while following a contemplative life also engage in the promotion of spirituality through their centres, parishes and churches.
Lay people, known as the Secular Order, follow their contemplative call in their everyday activities, devotion to the Virgin Mary is a characteristic of Carmelites and is symbolised by wearing the brown scapular.
Carmelites trace their roots and their name to Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, there, in the 13th century, a band of European men gathered together to live a simple life of prayer.
The first Carmelites came as pilgrims to Mount Carmel to live a solitary life-style and these early hermits were mostly laity, who lived an unofficial religious life of poverty, penance and prayer.
Between and , St. Albert, Patriarch of Jerusalem, brought the hermits on Mount Carmel together, at their request, into community.
He wrote them a formula for living, which expressed their own intention and reflected the spirit of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land and they were also inspired by the prophet Elijah who had been associated with Mount Carmel.
That influence can be seen by the words of Elijah, I have been zealous for the Lord. Within fifty years of receiving their rule the Carmelite hermits were forced to leave Mount Carmel, although Carmel itself contributed a number of gifted and respected humanists, the trend which started out as a good thing occasioned a general decline in religious fervor.
This factor, coupled with the decimation of the population and severe economic hardships, had a demoralizing effect, many Carmelites and even whole communities succumbed to contemporary attitudes and conditions diametrically opposed to their original vocation.
To meet this situation the Rule was mitigated several times, consequently, the Carmelites bore less and less resemblance to the first hermits of Mount Carmel.
Teresa of Avila considered the surest way to prayer to be a return to the Primitive Rule embodying Carmels authentic vocation, on 24 August , the new Convent of St.
In addition to this, St. Teresa envisioned a fully dedicated to poverty. Working in close collaboration with St.
Crucifix — A crucifix is an image of Jesus on the cross, as distinct from a bare cross. The representation of Jesus himself on the cross is referred to in English as the corpus, the crucifix is a principal symbol for many groups of Christians, and one of the most common forms of the Crucifixion in the arts.
The symbol is less common in churches of other Protestant denominations, the crucifix emphasizes Jesus sacrifice — his death by crucifixion, which Christians believe brought about the redemption of mankind.
Most crucifixes portray Jesus on a Latin cross, rather than any other shape, Western crucifixes usually have a three-dimensional corpus, but in Eastern Orthodoxy Jesus body is normally painted on the cross, or in low relief.
Strictly speaking, to be a crucifix, the cross must be three-dimensional, an entire painting of the Crucifixion of Jesus including a landscape background and other figures is not a crucifix either.
Large crucifixes high across the axis of a church are known by the Old English term rood. By the late Middle Ages these were a feature of Western churches.
The standard, four-pointed Latin crucifix consists of an upright post or stipes, there may also be a short projecting nameplate, showing the letters INRI.
The corpus of Eastern crucifixes is normally a two-dimensional or low relief icon that shows Jesus as already dead, his face peaceful, more sculptural small crucifixes in metal relief are also used in Orthodoxy, including as pectoral crosses and blessing crosses.
Western crucifixes may show Christ dead or alive, the presence of the wound in his ribs traditionally indicating that he is dead. In either case his face very often shows his suffering, in Orthodoxy he has normally been shown as dead since around the end of the period of Byzantine Iconoclasm.
Eastern crucifixes have Jesus two feet nailed side by side, rather than crossed one above the other, as Western crucifixes have shown them since around the 13th century.
The crown of thorns is also absent in Eastern crucifixes, since the emphasis is not on Christs suffering.
The S-shaped position of Jesus body on the cross is a Byzantine innovation of the late 10th century, probably more from Byzantine influence, it spread elsewhere in the West, especially to Italy, by the Romanesque period, though it was more usual in painting than sculpted crucifixes.
Its in Italy that the emphasis was put on Jesus suffering and realistic details, during the 13th century the suffering Italian model triumphed over the traditional Byzantine one anywhere in Europe also due to the works of artists such as Giunta Pisano and Cimabue.
Since the Renaissance the S-shape is generally less pronounced. He may be robed as a prophet, crowned as a king, on some crucifixes a skull and crossbones are shown below the corpus, referring to Golgotha, the site at which Jesus was crucified, which the Gospels say means in Hebrew the place of the skull.
Very large crucifixes have been built, the largest being the Cross in the Woods in Michigan, prayer in front of a crucifix, which is seen as a sacramental, is often part of devotion for Christians, especially those worshipping in a church, and also privately.
Rose — A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae, or the flower it bears. There are over a species and thousands of cultivars.
They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds.
Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant.
Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies, Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height.
Different species hybridize easily, and this has used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. The leaves are borne alternately on the stem, most roses are deciduous but a few are evergreen or nearly so.
The flowers of most species have five petals, with the exception of Rosa sericea, each petal is divided into two distinct lobes and is usually white or pink, though in a few species yellow or red.
Beneath the petals are five sepals and these may be long enough to be visible when viewed from above and appear as green points alternating with the rounded petals.
There are multiple superior ovaries that develop into achenes, the aggregate fruit of the rose is a berry-like structure called a rose hip.
Many of the domestic cultivars do not produce hips, as the flowers are so tightly petalled that they do not provide access for pollination, the hips of most species are red, but a few have dark purple to black hips.
Each hip comprises an outer layer, the hypanthium, which contains 5— seeds embedded in a matrix of fine. Rose hips of some species, especially the dog rose and rugosa rose, are rich in vitamin C.
The hips are eaten by fruit-eating birds such as thrushes and waxwings, some birds, particularly finches, also eat the seeds.
While the sharp objects along a stem are commonly called thorns. Rose prickles are typically sickle-shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation growing over it.
Despite the presence of prickles, roses are frequently browsed by deer, a few species of roses have only vestigial prickles that have no points.
Hesperrhodos contains Rosa minutifolia and Rosa stellata, from North America, platyrhodon with one species from east Asia, Rosa roxburghii.
The gardens cover approximately 23 hectares which is most of the Vatican Hill, the highest point is 60 metres above mean sea level. Stone walls bound the area in the North, South and West, the gardens and parks were established during the Renaissance and Baroque era and are decorated with fountains and sculptures.
There is no public access, but guided tours are available to limited numbers. The gardens also enshrine 15 Marian images venerated worldwide at the designation of the Roman Pontiff, the gardens date back to medieval times when orchards and vineyards extended to the north of the Papal Apostolic Palace.
The site received a major re-landscaping at the beginning of the 16th century, donato Bramantes original design was then split into three new courtyards, the Cortili del Belvedere, the della Biblioteca and the della Pigna in the Renaissance landscape design style.
Also in Renaissance style, a great rectangular Labyrinth, formal in design, set in boxwood and framed with Italian stone pines, in place of Nicholas IIIs enclosure, Bramante built a great rectilinear defensive wall.
There are a variety of fountains cooling the gardens, sculptures, an artificial grotto devoted to Our Lady of Lourdes, and an olive tree donated by the government of Israel.

My stay at Susanne was great. The room is big and confortable, and Susanne and her husband are the nicest people. And a nice surprise in the morning!
Susanne made my stay absolutely pleasant, from plenty of local tips to friendly conversation. I would definitely stay here again, and you should too!
Susanne and his Friend are lovely people open to help you in every respect and the bed is far bigger than you see on the photo: I had a horrible time at her house.
The lady was very finicky. She asked me wipe the bathroom after taking bath. She was not happy about heating the milk I had brought.
She gave me an unclean bowl to heat milk. When I told her I will clean it, she was upset that I will use extra water to clean it!
She was upset that I had kept the hot glass on the stone platform of her kitchen and also on the dinning table.
She was not happy that I received a call from my home in her living room as I was having snacks there. She even told me not to write a review as well.
And said she is upset that she is having problems with her boyfriend. In short, this place is expensive and the host is a horrible woman. Great please to stay in the south of Essen.
Susanne is a great host, the room is comfortable and quiet and has everything for a great Airbnb experience.
Overall a very good stay. Susanne is open minded and takes time to talk with you. The room is beautiful and an her small house in total is pretty cozy.
Especially in summer I enjoy the garden, when Susanne and I are sitting outside and discuss the really important issues ;- of this world.

I can definitely recommend it. Great value for the low price: It is however part of a bigger house, so be aware that the kitchen and bath may be shared though we were the only ones as far as we could see.
Friendly and quick communication to top it off. Amina was very friendly and we had great time at the room she built at the attic of her new-built house with private bathroom.
I stayed three nights at Amina and her husbands house. I want to recommend this accommodation as I found it to be very good as it had a friendly atmosphere and in very good order in every way.
As it also was very close 2-minute walk to S-bahn with a direct-line into city center and Messe Essen it made it convenient for me. In Lidl close to S-bahn they had the food I wanted to buy.
Big room, comfortable and clean. Bathroom very clean with all amenities and only for us, really nice shower.
We would come back for sure. She was very friendly, accommedating and quick to answer all our enquiries. Her place is nice and clean. She has a quiet cute little kid, so its family friendly.
He place is very warm. And there are multiple pillows and additional covers too. There is a Lidl supermarket 2 minutes away, right next to the underground station.
Essen mainstation is 10 minutes underground ride away. Would stay at her place again. Location was nice, as there were many different food options just a few feet from the main entrance.
Very conveniently located, easy check-in, good wifi, responsive host. The place is as it looks in the photos.
Great location, reasonably priced payed parking around the corner, easy check-in system and great communication. Only would have been a bit better if the pillows where a bit more fluffy: We reserved for 2 people, but only got 1 towel, 1 cussion and a 1 persons blanket.
Peter and Sigrid were great hosts. Check in was quick and we were allowed to arrive much later than planned. The room was cozy and Peter even brought us coffee in the morning.
There is no cot and the heating goes off at night so your little one will be cold. The garden where we had breakfast was great.
Peter was very communicative and accommodating. Peter and his wife had a lovely house and a spacious garden! We had a great time and had all the space we needed: The room was really clean and big enough for 2 persons.
We had an easy and comfortable experience with our hosts. The house and bedroom were perfect, and were at a good location to town. We enjoyed getting to know Peter and Sigrid while they put on a wonderful breakfast for us.
We had a very nice stay with Peter, Sigrid and Johannes. They are lovely hosts. In the morning they prepared a very good breakfast for us, with everything we could wish for.
We had breakfast with them, which was very nice and gemuttlich: This was a super place to stay, and Peter and Sigrid made us feel completely at home.
They are consummate hosts! This is a worthwhile stay and a worthwhile locale. Unfortunately I had to cancel the reservation. Tim and his co-host Saskia were super nice and understanding.
I presume the stay would be lovely. Recommend this place to everyone -- the hosts are friendly, welcoming, and were very helpful. The place was clean and all of the residents at the house were kind and lovely to have a chat with.
Tim is a very nice friendly host and the place is absolutely nice and quiet. I really enjoy my conversation with Tim as well as my stay in his house.
I will come back if I travel nearby. The room is quite big and comfortable. The hosts very helpful if you need something.

She did cooking for us, Silke is a such adorable and interesting woman! If we go again to Dortmund, we will go by her without any hesitation!
We absolutely recomend her! Very nice clean house, and a very special treatment from Silke. I stayed there only for the game of Borussia, Silke took me with her in the car to the Stadium and brought me back at night.
The next morning I got a breakfast with her, she is so lovely and after that she brought me right to the metro station with her car.
Silke is a marvellous host and her house a treasure trove of interesting items. Silke was very welcoming and we enjoyed a most comfortable stay.
House, room and facilities were very much as described. Recommended for all cat lovers! We would have no hesitation staying again. We could not recommend this house and host enough!
Silke was absolutely incredible. With coffee waiting for us on arrival, a lift to the stadium for our tour and beers in the evening Silke made our trip magical.
The house was beautiful, clean and has the coolest style! Thank you so much for going above and beyond! Our stay in Dortmund with Silke was very nice.
